Why I Built Lingua Agents

When I started teaching, one thing became clear fast: most learners do not struggle because they are lazy or incapable. They struggle because they never get enough time to actually speak. They study grammar, memorise vocabulary, complete the exercises, and then freeze the moment a real conversation starts. What they need is not more theory. It is more practice, and a safe place to make mistakes until the language starts to feel natural.

I still remember one of my learners, someone who had studied Dutch for years and could correctly do about any grammar exercise I gave her. Then one afternoon we practised a simple role-play exercise, and she went completely quiet. She knew every word she needed and still could not get a single one out. When I asked her about it afterwards, she said the same thing so many of my students did: "I know it in my head, but not in my mouth." That gap stayed with me.

For years I kept thinking the same thing: what if learners could practise far more often, in a structured way, without waiting for the next lesson? Not random practice, but guided practice built around real teaching. Eventually I stopped thinking about it and started building it.

That is Lingua Agents. I wanted to combine the structure of real lessons with the flexibility of AI, so people could practise when they need it, not only when a teacher is free. Today it brings together AI-guided courses, a conversation coach, explainers and exercises, pronunciation practice, and live classes. Some learners use it for everyday life, others for work or study. The thread is always the same: more practice, more confidence, more real use of the language.

And this is still the beginning. We will keep expanding the courses, tools, and languages, and exploring more immersive ways to learn. But the belief underneath it will not change: good language learning should help people communicate, not just study. It should help them speak, react, and express themselves with real confidence.

That is why I built Lingua Agents, and where we are heading next. If you would like to follow along, this blog is where I will share what we are building.
